Waiata Artist Trust World Homeless Day Event

Waiata Artist Trust World Homeless Day Event as Part of Auckland Heritage Festival 2018

On World Homeless Day, 10 October, Waiata Artist Trust brings us a special screening of local film Umbrella Man: A Tale of Remorse and Redemption.

Filmed on and around Karangahape Road, this story of a well known K’ Road character is an important one to be remembered and is especially poignant on World Homeless Day. This tale is about an elderly homeless man who befriends a runaway teen in order to rescue him from a life on the streets, and in the process they become each other’s salvation.

The event on 10 October, entitled “Korero K’ Road”, is supported by the K’ Road Business Association and is part of Auckland Heritage Festival 2018. The evening will include a short korero (talk) about Hape and his karanga (greeting) followed by the film screening. Cast and crew involved in the film will be present at this special screening.

Film Synopsis:

Tragedy changes us. It redefines us. Bends us. Sometimes it even breaks us.

In the gritty underworld of urban Auckland, NUHAKA (65) is a homeless Maori man whose mind was fractured by the guilt he feels about the tragic drowning of his wife and son twenty-five years ago. Nuhaka has learned to survive on the streets, living by his own code, while clinging to visions of a tribal past for comfort.

Encountering WIREMU (16), a runaway Maori teen, Nuhaka is dragged back to the surface of his own mind and reality. Saving the boy becomes Nuhaka’s focus, even though Wiremu is resistant to reconnecting with his own language and culture. For Nuhaka, the boy is not only a reminder of his dead son, but he also sees in Wiremu the possibility of his own redemption and salvation.

When the lurking danger of the city rises up and strikes Nuhaka down, it is up to Wiremu to help the old man return home to say goodbye.
