Young Latter-day Saints Gather in Auckland

Youth conference brings teens together for inspiration and social activities

970 youth from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are enjoying a five-day conference in Auckland this week, titled "For the Strength of Youth" (FSY).

The conference, held at King's College, has as its theme "If We Love Him," referring to Jesus Christ.

The purpose of FSY is to assist youth to strengthen their faith in God and Jesus Christ by providing inspiring learning opportunities and wholesome social experiences.

The young people, ages 14 to 17, are spending the week participating in a variety of devotionals, workshops and other activities.

Among the guest presenters are Elder Glen Burgess, a local Church leader; Motu Tony, GM of high performance at NZ Rugby League; musical theatre star Graeme Purcell; and Survivor NZ alumnus Shayna Swain.

Activities include sport, variety shows, games, musical performances and writing to young New Zealanders currently serving 18 to 24 months as missionaries in other parts of the world.

The conference has drawn young people from throughout the greater Auckland area and Northland; and some from Fiji, Niue, Perth, Melbourne and the Cook Islands.

Abinadi and Natasha Lameko, conference organisers, are being supported by 175 young adults (ages 18-30) who are acting as group leaders and mentors to the youth.

"We are super excited to be asked to deliver such a powerful program," the Lamekos wrote this week.

"The change in the lives of the youth from day one to day six is nothing less than a miracle."
