Commissioner for Waiwhetu School in Lower Hutt

NEWS RELEASE

2 March 2000

Immediate Release

Commissioner for Waiwhetu School in Lower Hutt

Former president of the NZ School Trustees Association Janet Kelly is to be commissioner of Waiwhetu School in Lower Hutt, following the resignation last month of the school's board of trustees.

Janet Kelly will be responsible for the functions and duties of the board until a new one is elected.

Ministry National Operations Manager in Lower Hutt, Alan Upston, says Janet Kelly is an experienced school trustee who has represented schools at a local, national and international level. "She is very experienced in all matters concerning the governance and management of schools."

The daily management of Waiwhetu School would continue to be the responsibility of the school's principal, in consultation with Janet Kelly.

"The parents of children at the school can be assured that every step is being taken to ensure that this event does not affect the education provided at the school," said Alan Upston. "The appointment of a commissioner is an interim measure. It will be Janet Kelly's job to help the school to operate effectively and to address its immediate concerns."
