Teachers Say Ban NCEA Till Resources Available

"The PPTA Executive should take literacy lessons if they interpret the recent ballot on NCEA as 'approving its continued implementation'," said Concerned Teachers spokesperson Peter Calvert. "The ballot actually showed that while 65% of teachers voted to support in principle the NCEA, 82% are unhappy about it proceeding till the resources are provided by the Government."

He was commenting on today's statement by PPTA that 'Executive members have endorsed the result of a ballot of members on the National Certificate of Educational Achievement and approved its continued implementation.'

"A Term 3 nationwide survey of teacher opinion on the NCEA similarly showed that about half the teaching force would support a ban on the new qualification till time allowances are provided," said Concerned Teachers spokesperson Peter Calvert. He was referring to the results of three of the survey questions (see below). "Our survey showed that over 90% of teachers want a time allowance provided - if the new qualification is to proceed."

"The fact is that just on half of teachers are prepared to ban work on the NCEA right now. They want the PPTA executive to ban any more work on the NCEA until the Government provides the resources," said Mr Calvert.
