Tech Newspaper Goes Online

February 11th, 2002

Otago Polytechnic’s student newspaper – gYRo – has become the first from a New Zealand ‘tech’ to be published online. Issue one for 2002 was released today in both print form and online on student portal Varsity.co.nz - www.varsity.co.nz/gyro.

Mark Baxter, Student Liaison Officer for the Otago Polytech Students’ Association, worked with Varsity.co.nz to get gYRo online up and running. He said “we’ve been keen to get gYRo online for some time now and it’s been great to make it happen right from the start of 2002.”

Varsity.co.nz’s Jeremy Hunt is pleased to see another student paper online. “We’ve helped several university papers develop an online presence in the last year or so and it’s a logical step to start doing the same with other tertiary institutions.”

Hunt added, “it’s a genuine win-win arrangement, with the student papers getting online at no cost or hassle to themselves, while Varsity.co.nz gains great local content.”
