'Private sector, public good'

'Private sector, public good' is the message from the tertiary education sector

New Zealand Association of Private Education Providers (NZAPEP) today endorsed the proposal by Independent Schools of New Zealand to more closely align funding for public and private schools.

New Zealanders continue to benefit tremendously from the tertiary funding reforms of the 1990s which introduced a near-level playing field among public and private tertiary education providers.

This increase towards equitable funding for private tertiary providers has allowed thousands of students and employers to benefit from these key sources of skills and talent.

Despite some political roll back of these policies, the tertiary funding system is still far ahead of the school sector, which remains mired in artificial distinctions between public and private provision.

The school sector stands out as an anomaly in New Zealand education. Any policy that would make the school sector more like the diverse and responsive tertiary sector is a huge step forward.

NZAPEP strongly supports the policy position set out by the Independent Schools of New Zealand.
