Stevenson Group To Sponsor Learning Centre At Auckland Museum

Auckland, 3 December 2004 – Prime Minister Helen Clark today announced a major sponsorship by Stevenson Group of the new Learning Centre at the Auckland War Memorial Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira.

The sponsorship by Stevenson Group of the new Learning Centre, to be open to the public in December 2006, is worth $1.5 million.

The Stevenson Learning Centre is part of the $60 million redevelopment of the Auckland Museum, which also includes a two-storey underground car park, two levels for collection storage, a new exhibition hall and an auditorium events centre.

“Our sponsorship of the Stevenson Learning Centre highlights a natural affinity between Auckland Museum, an iconic institution enjoyed by generations of Aucklanders, and the Stevenson Group – a name synonymous with the progress and development of Auckland,” said Stevenson Group Managing Director John Rae.

“Our sponsorship, funded by the company and the Stevenson Family Trust, is a substantial one and will support the Learning Centre over the next five years.

“The values embodied by the Stevenson Learning Centre – curiosity, innovation, wonder, involvement and family – are values Stevenson is delighted to be associated with.

“The Stevenson Learning Centre will provide an interactive, hands-on environment for children to learn through play and exploration,” John Rae said.

Over the past 90 years the family-owned Stevenson Group has contributed to a range of major projects that have underpinned the city’s progress, such as the southern motorway, Auckland’s sewerage system, the Nihotapu dam and Hunua watermain. The Group’s current business operations include transport, quarries, concrete and building products.

“The modernisation project at Auckland Museum mirrors changes taking place at the Stevenson Group itself,“ said John Rae.

“We have recently restructured our operations into five stand-alone business and three internal divisional teams, giving a much stronger customer focus.

“Like Auckland Museum, at Stevenson Group we are excited about the future,” John Rae said.
