More than 70 year 9 spellers – including students from Hawkes Bay, Wanganui and Kapiti - will face a real challenge when they get together for the 2007 New Zealand National Spelling Bee Wellington Regional – the last of five regional competitions around the country. The pronouncer is Roger Gascoigne.

The top three finalists will go on to compete against nine others from around the country in the national Final on Saturday 24 April.

The winner of the Final will represent New Zealand at the Olympics of Spelling, the 80th Annual Scripps-Howard US Spelling Bee, which will be held in Washington DC between 30 May and 1 June this year.

The US Spelling Bee has been held more times than the Academy Awards and is the world’s longest run academic competition, attracting more than nine million competitors hopeful of winning a place in the championship final.

This is the third year the competition is being held and the response to the event continues to be positive with more and more schools holding their own spelling bees and sending their top finalists.

The competition promises to be an exciting, nail-biting event for both competitors and audience who are welcome to come and watch (free entry).
