Manukau Institute of Technology baking students feel the heat

Fresh ideas and hot competition summed up the Manukau Institute of Technology baking students’ assessments recently. Pakuranga resident Kathy Robinson produced an item of exceptional quality and achieved the highest assessment.

The students prepared their baked offering as part of
their final assessments
which were the culmination of one-year full time study towards their Certificate
in Baking (Level 3).

“Kathy, Sean Youn, Amy Bramble and Karen Wetzel all did extremely well. The diversity of baked products today means skilled bakers are in great demand in all sectors of the industry,” says School of Baking and Patisserie lecturer, Ralf Schmidt.

“This programme includes practical and theoretical sessions on a range of subjects that the students can then apply in real world situations. Our students did very well in this assessment and we can see that they have all used what we have taught the students over the year to great success.”

Ralf adds that the overall quality of work was high this year and he anticipates that many of the students will continue on to a successful career path.

“There are so many tremendous employment opportunities in this sector. Students can diversify into any area that interests them from supermarket bakeries, to hot bread shops, to home bakeries. And they can use their skills anywhere in the world.”

The top students live in the following areas:
- Kathy Robinson, Pakuranga
- Amy Bramble, Whitford
- Sean Youn, Hillcrest
- Karen Wetzel, Manukau
