Aid to further study
abroad
Students from the Universities of Auckland and Canterbury have received valuable scholarships to help them further their studies in Scotland and in Hungary.
The Anne Reid Memorial Trust Scholarship for 2009 was awarded to Chris Cottrell and to Jun Bouterey-Ishido who each received $20,000.
Chris Cottrell, who gained Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Architectural Studies degrees at Auckland, will be taking a Master of Fine Arts at the Edinburgh College of Art.
He has been accepted into a studio-based course “Art, Space & Nature” lasting two years. The course will build on his cross-disciplinary background in architecture, fine arts and mathematics while developing his art practice in a vibrant academic setting.
On graduating he plans to teach in Europe for two or three years. He will then seek an academic position in New Zealand whereby he can “contribute to this country’s art and design culture through teaching, exhibiting, public discussion and academic writing. This will be informed by my exposure to leading edge practice in Europe while studying.”
Jun Bouterey-Ishido, who graduated from Canterbury with a Bachelor of Music with Honours, will study piano performance at the Liszt Academy in Budapest for the next two to three years. He will also continue his studies in violin.
“Being at the Liszt Academy will give me the invaluable opportunity to study under international artists both at the Academy and through masterclasses and summer courses in Hungary and in other parts of Europe. This will extend my skills as well as enable me to gain a much deeper musical and instrumental knowledge and understanding.”
Immersion in an intensely stimulating musical and cultural environment, says Jun, “will similarly present opportunities for growth as an artist”.
The Anne Reid Memorial Trust Scholarship, established in 2002, assists graduate students from Auckland or Canterbury to study English literature, music or fine arts overseas. It commemorates Anne Reid who studied and taught at Canterbury and the National University of Singapore.
