Two members of a design agency have been recognised with prestigious design awards.

Josh Barr and Anzac Tasker, fellows at designworks’ Wellington and Auckland offices respectively, were the Supreme Gold and Silver prize winners in the student graphic design category at the BeST Awards.

The BeST Design Awards, a national award programme run by the Designers Institute of New Zealand (DINZ), recognises the country’s best graphic, product and spatial design. Entrants were asked to choose a typeface and create a narrative around it.

Josh was awarded both the Supreme and the Gold Award for his entry on Akzidenz Grotesk, an archaic typeface dating back to the Victorian era.

He said: "I think good typography is about crafting the right language and not about seductive visuals.”

Anzac was awarded the Silver Award for his work on explaining the gap between execution and intent. He designed an incomplete typeface, which at first glance appeared chaotic but required time to make sense of it.

He said: “I wanted to demonstrate my theory that we have become too reliant on technology for graphic design. The idea of taking typography out of its comfort zone symbolises designers stepping out of their comfort zone, for example, computers.”
