NZ High School Environmental Champions for 2010

NZ High School Environmental Champions for 2010 Announced

New Zealand’s top environmental high schools have been announced following their participation in the rigorous Enviro Challenge programme.

The Enviro Challenge programme tests high school teams’ abilities in carrying out an environmental audit of their school, developing and implementing solutions. Teams present their findings and solutions to a panel of experts as well as producing video and advertising posters to sell their environmental messages in their schools. Debating the merits of New Zealand’s emission trading scheme, competing in environmental knowledge quizzes and participating in an energy, waste and transport audit race were all part of the competition days held in Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty. Over 50 schools participated in the programme.

The programme is supported by funding from Waitakere City Council, Tauranga City Council, Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust, Environment Bay of Plenty’s Environmental Enhancement Fund, Envirostate Limited and the Enviro Challenge New Zealand Charitable Trust.

Enviro Challenge New Zealand Charitable Trust’s chairman Calum Revfem says the programme this year has show cased some amazing young talent and innovative environmental and sustainability solutions for high schools and their communities. The standard has been exceptionally high.

One ambassador student from each participating High School has been selected to take part in the 2010 Enviro Challenge Ambassador Programme in Auckland in July.

The winners are:

Rotorua: Western Heights High School

Tauranga/Western BOP: Te Puke High School

Waitakere: Rutherford College

North Shore: Rosmini College

Auckland City: Diocesan School for Girls

Eastern Bay of Plenty: Trident High School

Hamilton: Hillcrest High School
