Out of the Boardroom and into the Classroom!

MEDIA RELEASE

Out of the Boardroom and into the Classroom!

Over 50 business leaders will be heading back to school on Wednesday 1st September when they shadow a Manukau school principal during a typical day as part of the Principal for a Day programme.

Principal for a Day attracts a number of large New Zealand organisations as well as small local businesses who show commitment to the education sector by recognising the importance of supporting our schools.

As well as participating in a variety of activities such as addressing an assembly, teaching class, meetings with staff etc. the business leaders will be embracing this year’s theme of Numeracy by talking with Principals, teachers and students about how numeracy is applied in their organisations. Principals will also be sharing relevant data and statistics on numeracy and discussing numeracy in schools.

“Over 52% of adult Aucklanders have low numeracy rates affecting both schools and businesses,” says Bernardine Vester, COMET CEO. “Principal for a Day is a great way for the education and business communities to start thinking about ways to tackle the low numeracy rates in Auckland.”

COMET matches business leaders with principals in primary and secondary schools in Manukau strengthening understanding and forging closer ties between the business community and the education sector. At the end of the day, principals and business leaders will meet at the Council’s Civic Centre for a reception hosted by Manukau City Mayor, Len Brown.
