Canterbury Uni offers NZ Students Semester Study Abroad

2 March 2011

University of Canterbury offers New Zealand students semester study abroad

The University of Canterbury is offering study abroad options at the University of Adelaide for this semester for up to 500 selected University of Canterbury undergraduate students. The University of Adelaide has made the offer as part of an existing relationship it has with the University of Canterbury. Adelaide is a sister city of Christchurch.

University of Canterbury Vice-Chancellor Rod Carr says he is delighted with the offer which will address some short-term issues and advance long-term plans.

“We are grateful to the University of Adelaide for making the offer to quickly accommodate some of our students who hold current New Zealand passports. This will help give our students the opportunity to add an international component to their degree. It has been part of the University’s strategy to ensure all domestic students have the opportunity for an international experience as part of their studies.”

University of Adelaide Vice-Chancellor and President Professor James McWha says he is pleased to be able to assist the University of Canterbury.

"The University of Adelaide has a special relationship with the University of Canterbury. Christchurch is a sister city to Adelaide and our two universities are involved in a range of collaborations, such as in research. I have also worked in higher education in New Zealand for many years. Our sympathy and understanding extends to the people of Christchurch, and we see this as an opportunity to strengthen the ties between our two institutions at a time when it is most needed."

It is expected that students selected for this exchange will be able to travel to Adelaide as soon as this weekend.

The students will be housed in halls of residence or private billets in Adelaide and join existing academic programmes, mainly at first-year level.

We will send some University of Canterbury staff to provide academic and practical support. We will ensure that these students easily fit back into semester 2 courses from 11 July 2011.
Adelaide has confirmed there will be no additional tuition fees charged to students. However, students will have to pay for their accommodation in Adelaide.

StudyLink has confirmed that students are eligible for loans and allowances as if they were studying at Canterbury.
