Retirement earned after 45 years in education
After 45 years in the education sector secretary for education Karen Sewell has earned her retirement, PPTA president Robin Duff says.
Sewell was the first education secretary to come from a secondary background and - despite a somewhat rocky relationship with PPTA at times, during collective bargaining - has always focussed on students and schools.
She was a PPTA member throughout her teaching career and became the first chairperson of the New Zealand Secondary Principals’ Council – from 1994 to 1996.
From 2001 to 2006 she was the chief review officer for the Education Review Office and in 2005 was asked to act as chief executive for NZQA.
“Karen’s secondary education background has given her a good understanding of the issues schools, students and teachers face every day.
“We wish her all the best in her retirement,”
Duff
said.
