UC students selected for post-earthquake exchange to Oxford

UC students selected for post-earthquake exchange to the University of Oxford

Two cohorts of University of Canterbury students will soon be heading to the UK to complete a term of study at the University of Oxford.

“After the 22 February earthquake, the University of Oxford’s Vice-Chancellor made a generous offer to host some senior students from the University of Canterbury at Oxford for their summer term,” said University of Canterbury Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Town.

“Twelve PhD students and 31 Honours students will be spending 8 weeks living in one of the Oxford Colleges and studying at the prestigious university.

The PhD students will be working closely with academics at the University on their thesis topics, for example, Josie Toop (Law) will be pursuing her research on “Improving the Effectiveness of International Environmental Treaty Regimes: Can Application of Principles derived from Global Administrative Law help?”, Ahsan Nazer (Physics) will be continuing his researching “The averaging problem and inhomogeneous cosmology”, and, very appropriately, Gabriel Weibl (National Centre for Research on Europe) will be continuing his research on “Internationalisation of New Zealand universities and international student mobility”.”

“The UC Honours students heading to the University of Oxford will be attending lectures and tutorials across a range of subjects, including Art History, English, History, Biology, Philosophy, Geography, Mathematics and Physics.”

Students’ flights to and from the University of Oxford have been paid for by the University of Canterbury, assisted by Air New Zealand.

The UC students will depart for Oxford in late April to begin their studies in early May. They will return to Christchurch in late June/early July ready to resume their studies at UC in semester two in July.
