Aoraki Polytechnic Release 2012 Prospectus

Aoraki Polytechnic Release 2012 Prospectus

Aoraki Polytechnic’s 2012 prospectus will be available for first time viewing in the weekend at the Timaru Careers Expo and online at Aoraki’s website.

Eight new programmes have been added to the portfolio, creating further study pathways and producing more skilled workers in the areas industry demand.

Science is an important aspect of our local industry, therefore Aoraki will offer the National Diploma in Science (Level 5) in Timaru 2012. Aoraki is currently developing partnerships with other providers to create direct links from this programme to higher level Bachelor qualifications.

Flowing on from Aoraki’s already successful level three Early Childhood programme, if you want to be an early childhood teacher you can now pathway on to the National Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5), and even go on to a degree with Aoraki and the Open Polytechnic’s relationship.

“Aoraki is committed to offering higher level education and working towards offering the next step of pathways in Early Childhood Education,” says Health and Education team leader Andrea Leslie.

In the area of community support, focused on people already in the care-giving and home-based support industry, the National Certificate in Community Support Services (Team Leader) (Level 5) is the next step from Aoraki’s current level 3 programme and gives graduates the qualifications to be a team leader of home community support carers.

Aoraki Polytechnic is committed to the bi-culturalism in New Zealand and understands the importance of Maori for people interested in working in relevant areas of the education, business and public sectors, the community, and the Māori arena culture. Previously Aoraki offered part time Te Reo programmes and for 2012 will offer a full time National Certificate in Reo Maori (Level 4).

Due to demand from industry here and overseas, Aoraki plans to offer the National Diploma in Hospitality (Operational Management) (Level 5) in 2012. The programme will cater for the national skill shortage in supervisory management in hospitality.

There is also a national skill shortage for qualified bakers in New Zealand. The National Certificate in Baking (Level 2) is a stepping stone to gain an apprenticeship in baking. Aoraki has an award winning qualified tutor who held the national bread making title in England for seven years. Aoraki has also equipped itself with new industry standard equipment such as deck ovens, bread divider moulders and pastry breaks.

Aoraki continue to grow their Agriculture portfolio and will offer a National Certificate in Agriculture (Level 4) for 2012. A natural progression from their current level 3 programme giving people the opportunity to gain higher level learning and more opportunities for careers in herd management and eventual farm management - which is in demand from industry.

National Certificate in Horticulture (Level 4) gives students the opportunity to gain a qualification with the level of knowledge and skill that is recognised in the industry. The programme is a natural progression from Aoraki’s current level 3 programme and builds the credibility of horticulture at Aoraki by offering higher level programmes and further pathways.

All programmes are subject to gaining internal and external approval.
