Arrow Aims to Help Create Future Leaders through New NMIT Scholarships

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Nelson branch of project and construction management company Arrow International that will provide scholarships to encourage future leaders through education.

Arrow International Nelson is offering students a number of Trades scholarships as well as a scholarship that contributes to NMIT’s Bachelor of Commerce. The scholarships range in value from $1000 to $2500.

NMIT Chief Executive Tony Gray says it’s a valuable partnership that has many benefits for students.

“When a local business is prepared to help support students in this way, there are enormous benefits. Not only do the selected students get financial support to help them achieve their qualifications, there is also a wider benefit that they can foster links directly to a company that has local and international experience in its field,” say Tony Gray.

Arrow International’s Nelson Branch Manager Steve Kelso says they’re proud to be able to assist in developing future leaders.

“Our aim is to encourage future leaders to develop from within our education system.
In 2009 Arrow International embarked on a philosophy of giving back to the community that we’re part of with the introduction of the Arrow Foundation, a students leadership scholarship in secondary schools throughout New Zealand. This new partnership with NMIT is embellishment of that concept, and we’re now giving back to education at the tertiary level, “

“The synergies between Arrow and NMIT both building towards the future makes for a great partnership. We also respect that government funding for NMIT is reasonably tight at present, and therefore if we can assist NMIT to maintain and build on what they currently offer, then this is excellent for the growth of the community and region. ”

“Our Project Manager for the Arts and Media building, Colin Anderson, graduated from NMIT trades programmes over 20 years ago, so it is rewarding that we can help support other construction industry leaders of the future,” says Steve Kelso.

Arrow International project managed construction of NMIT’s progressive Arts and Media Building and they have now sponsored the Media Suite in that building, and Steve Kelso says it’s symbolic of the way they value education.

” As project and construction managers we are very proud of this building, as we had to use new technology and innovative construction methods.”

There will be five Trades scholarships a year designed to help students who have studied on the Youth Guarantee Trades Scholarship progress to a fulltime trades programme. Additionally Arrow has provided a three year scholarship within NMIT’s Bachelor of Commerce programme to help promote future business leaders.

Steve Kelso says the scholarships reflect the mix of people, skills and backgrounds within Arrow International.

“Some of our very best people come from either a trades or business background, which is why we’ve chosen to focus on a Youth Trades Scholarship and a Business scholarship. Our aim is to promote and support future leaders, the way our own company does with it’s staff, and we hope these scholarships and our long-term association with NMIT will make it a reality for some of our region’s ambitious young people.”
