News Release – For immediate use

Study scholarships an ‘incentive to succeed’

Almost $90,000 worth of scholarships to study at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology next year are now up for grabs.

One of the first to win an NMIT scholarship for next year is Janette Foster, a second year Bachelor of Applied Social Sciences (Social Work) student who won the 2013 ‘The Edge’ Scholarship after her name was drawn from over 100 entries at NMIT’s recent Open Day in Nelson.

“I was so surprised to win, I never win anything,” she says. “Getting this scholarship was such good timing, it’s been a tough year and I really needed a boost.”

The award, valued at $2500, will cover half Mrs Foster’s fees for her final year of study next year and is an added incentive for her to succeed.

“I’m not eligible for any student allowances, I’ve got a student loan and am totally reliant on my husband’s income so this will really make a difference. It really takes the pressure off and lifts my motivation for next year.”

People wanting to study at NMIT in 2013 can start applying now for the almost 70 scholarships available in a range of programme areas including Aviation, Information Technology, Viticulture, Commerce and Nursing. The scholarships are individually valued from $400 up to $5,500 and are distinct with their own criteria. Some are awarded based on academic achievement while others are for financial or cultural reasons.

“Thanks to the generous support of local industries, business, individuals and organisations we are able to offer scholarships to students throughout the region to help ease the financial burden of study and provide an incentive to pursue a tertiary qualification.” NMIT Chief Executive Tony Gray says. “There are a wide range of scholarships on offer covering the full spectrum of programme areas and for everyone from school leavers to adult students “

Other scholarships on offer include the NMIT Principal’s Award Scholarships, offered to a high-achieving year 13 student in every secondary school in the Top of the South intending to study a diploma or degree level programme at NMIT in 2013. Winners receive $2000 towards their study costs for 2013.

In addition to financial assistance, NMIT also provides the popular ‘Half a Degree for Free’ scholarship which can save students up to the value of $33,000. Designed for Year 13 school leavers throughout the region by providing ‘Half a Degree for Free’ aims to assist students from local secondary schools who go on to study fulltime on selected NMIT degree programmes.

Applications for scholarships close on 25 March 2013, with winners officially acknowledged during ceremonies at NMIT’s Nelson and Marlborough campuses.
