First Assistant Dean Appointed At Waitemata

The University of Auckland has appointed Professor Martin Connolly as Assistant Dean of the Waitemata Clinical Campus.

Professor Connolly has been Freemasons' Professor of Geriatric Medicine at The University of Auckland and Geriatrician at Waitemata DHB since 2006. He qualified with honours at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and obtained his MD from the same institution in 1990.

His research interests include chronic care management, quality of life for older adults and the care of the elderly.

Based at the Waitemata District Health Board, the Waitemata Clinical Campus provides an environment for health professionals to train, work and develop professionally as researchers and educators.

The appointment strengthens and enables the establishment of other Centres of Excellence in clinical areas relevant to the needs of the communities served by Waitemata DHB. The DHB is New Zealand’s largest, serving a population of 550,000 with more than 6,400 staff working across 30 locations.

Waitemata DHB CEO Dr Dale Bramley says Professor Connolly will be the first Assistant Dean in the Waitemata campus’ history.

“He will play a key role in the ongoing development of our relationship with The University of Auckland.

“This relationship - with research, and the role of the tertiary education sector - will play an increasing role in healthcare in the future as we seek new and innovative ways to improve the way we deliver services to our population.”

Professor John Fraser, Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at The University of Auckland, says Professor Connolly’s appointment will further enhance the strong relationship the University has with the country’s largest District Health Board.

“Martin is well known for his internationally recognised research in the area of geriatric medicine and his commitment and dedication to academic medicine. His appointment was strongly supported by senior representatives of both the Faculty and Waitemata DHB.’
