Otago Polytechnic rates highly in 2012 course completions

Otago Polytechnic has capped off another successful year of course completions in 2012, with success rates being maintained at pleasing levels according to the Educational Performance document, released by the Polytechnic yesterday.

The internally-developed document, which measures successful course completions against 2010 and 2011 statistics, indicates a steady improvement in overall course completions, with a considerable increase in Maori and Pacific student completions since 2011.

Since 2010 there has been a:
• 7.29 per cent improvement in all student success rates
• 9.63 per cent improvement in Maori success rates (6.8 per cent on 2011)
• 7.14 per cent improvement in non-Maori and non-Pacific success rates
• 8.35 per cent improvement in Pacific success rates (10.6 per cent on 2011).

Otago Polytechnic’s Chief Executive, Phil Ker, is happy with the results. “It is very pleasing to see an upward trend in our course completions. It means our students are leaving us well prepared and ready for the workplace,” he says.

“We’ve capped off the past few years with very positive results and I look forward to seeing this continue.”

Along with the internal performance review, carried out annually, Otago Polytechnic participates in several external evaluations and surveys including the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) External Evaluation and Review, and the Australasian Survey of Student Engagement (AUSSE).

The NZQA awarded the highest ratings possible to Otago Polytechnic in its External Evaluation and Review of the institute in 2011 – a review which occurs every four years. It has been ‘Highly Confident’ in both the educational performance and self-assessment capability of Otago Polytechnic.

For the past three years, the Polytechnic has participated in the AUSSE - a comprehensive comparative survey of Australasian tertiary institutions, in which students assess their tertiary institutes. The Polytechnic has received stellar ratings in the annual survey in areas such as higher order thinking, student and staff interaction, work-integrated learning and overall satisfaction.
