UCOL Fashion Student Designs Knight Wear

Medieval Armour was the inspiration for Whanganui UCOL Bachelor of Fashion student Chloe Sanson’s men’s wear collection Excalibur.

Chloe is one of nine, third year Fashion students who will each showcase a three piece mini collection at an exhibition titled, Fashion Asylum opening next week.

Chloe says a visit to a Medieval Market piqued her interest in the detailing of armour and the surcoat, a garment worn over armour.

She says she enjoys the design process the most. “I also enjoy the pattern drafting and construction process which are essential to pull off your design.”

“There is a huge sense of achievement when you know that you have created a garment from start to finish in all aspects,” says Chloe. “Seeing the final outcome makes all the hard work, late nights and stress worthwhile!”

Josiene Van Maarseveen’s mini collection Carte Blanche, enabled her to mix her knowledge of historical costumes with modern fashion. Her inspiration came from a book of drawings by the 19th century German biologist Ernst Haeckel. “The book is full of wonderful plates depicting all kinds of creatures, with different shapes and textures,” says Josiene. “This collection shows my love of detail and costuming. I would love to become a designer for movie costumes.”

Fashion Asylum will be launched at the Edith Gallery at UCOL’s Rutland Street campus on Monday 20 May. It will be open for public viewing between 10.00am and 3.00pm from Tuesday 21 to Friday 24 May.

Themes as diverse as tutus, shells and umbrellas have inspired the group of students.
