Nominations open for UCOL Council Honours Awards

The opportunity to recognise long-standing contributions to UCOL, the community or society in general is available by nominating someone for a UCOL Council Honours Award.

UCOL Council Chair Trevor Goodwin says ideally people nominated would come from Palmerston North, Whanganui and Masterton where UCOL has campuses, and reflect UCOL’s strengths in Trades and Technology, Creative programmes, Health and Science and Business and I.T.

“The Awards are UCOL Council’s way of recognising people who stand as role models and inspiration to our students, and reflect UCOL’s close connections with its communities. We want to hear about people who deserve to be acknowledged in this way.”

“Past recipients have achieved success through hard work, excellence, commitment and innovation and have all made significant contributions to the community. These are values that UCOL respects and upholds, and seeks to foster in its students.”

There are three types of awards – Honorary Fellow, Honorary Associate, and Institutional Medal. Criteria for nominations can be found on http://awards.ucol.ac.nz/, which must be received by Friday 27 September. All nominations are confidential, even to the person being nominated.

Awards were given to the following nominees in 2012: Manawatu businessman Sir Pat Higgins, WORLD fashion designer and businesswoman Denise L’Estrange Corbet, and Whanganui eye health campaigner Mike Webber were made Honorary Fellows of UCOL. Chair of REAP (Rural Education Activities Programme) Aotearoa and former head of the Wairarapa Community Polytechnic, Jean McCombie was made an Honorary Associate, and an Institutional Medal went to educationalist and past Principal of Awatapu College in Palmerston North, Tina Sims.
