NMIT Launches First Post-Graduate Level Qualification

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is offering its first post-graduate level programme with the launch of a new national Post Graduate Diploma in Business Enterprise.

Designed for people looking to start their own business as well as ‘internal entrepreneurs’ who want to learn about innovation, entrepreneurship and business enterprise management, the first paper from the Level 8 qualification will be offered at the Nelson Campus.

NMIT Group Manager Sharon McGuire says moving into the post-graduate space will increase the institute’s capability range and provide qualifications that will be of interest to many of its graduates, business people and international students.

“This programme focuses on the design and development of new, entrepreneurial business ventures providing skills to go onto work in strategic management, business management, corporate planning, human resources management, technology support services or continue into further studies and pathway into AUT’s MBA or Masters Programme.”

The programme’s Coordinator Nic John hopes the new Post Graduate Diploma in Business Enterprise will make a positive contribution to growing the regional economy.

“Our region is high in small to medium enterprises – the number of company ‘births’ is higher than the national average, but so is the number of company ‘deaths’. The entrepreneurial spirit is there, but perhaps sometimes people haven’t fleshed out their business plans enough. This programme will be a way to help them do that and succeed,” he says.

Nic John says the new programme is very practical, very applied and project-based. Made up of eight papers studied in four week blocks, it will be delivered in a way that is short, sharp and tailored to suit people who are already working. Classes for ‘taught’ papers will be offered over a three day weekend.

“The diploma enables you to walk through a new project from start to finish with the aim of creating a new, innovative and economically viable business enterprise or making an enterprising change within an existing organisation at the end of it,” he says.

There are two pathways into the programme – one is for those with undergraduate (Bachelor) degrees and the other is an industry pathway – for those with industry-experience.

Enrolments are now open for the Post Graduate Diploma in Business Enterprise. For further information call 0800 422 733 or visit www.nmit.ac.nz
