OUSA Elections on Track for High Turn Out

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OUSA Elections on Track for High Turn Out

This week has seen the highest numbers of OUSA members turning out to elect a new student 2014 Executive in recent years and numbers are projected to be the highest since 2004.

At present the OUSA elections have over 500 students more than at this point last year (2012) and at present voting is on track to be the highest since 2004 when 3688 students voted. With one day of campaigning and advertising to go, voter turnout has already passed 3200.

“Students are notoriously tough to get voting, so it’s great to see so many turning out this year.” Said Francisco Hernandez, OUSA President, “We’ve got a solid mix of students running and this year we’ve been highly active, so we’re hoping this turns out to be a great turnout for the OUSA.”

“I think the success is due to a number of things, candidates are actively promoting themselves, we’re pushing our own promotions and our referendum contains some controversial questions as well.” Said Hernandez, “If we can get 20 percent of the 20,000 members of the electorate we’d be stoked considering the short period of campaigning, plus the very small amount of money allowed for promotion compared to the hundreds of thousands currently being spent in the local body elections.”

“This year OUSA has pushed out clear issues and our campaigns have been successful in achieving a number of important results such as the movement on the housing warrant of fitness scheme, student airport shuttles, cheap and free food options, and much more.” Said Hernandez, “With our future already including great initiatives like improving our recreation facilities and continuing to drive key issues, it’s proving OUSA is relevant and that students want to govern it.”
