Contribution of teachers recognised on World Teachers’ Day

The Secretary for Education Peter Hughes wants to recognise the extraordinary work teachers do every day.

“I have enormous respect for teachers and the difference they make in our communities. They’re out there every day doing a great job for kids, working alongside them, igniting their passion for learning.

“Teaching is one of the most important professions.

“A good education gives our children and young people more choices and opportunities. It helps them to lead productive and successful lives, and also contributes to our country as a whole being productive and successful. Education is the bedrock on which New Zealand’s social and economic development is built.

“If there is a “silver bullet” for the challenges we face as a society, it is education. It holds the key to getting in early and transforming young lives,

“At the Ministry, we see our job as supporting teachers in every way we can to help every learner succeed.

“I am grateful to all the teachers of New Zealand who give so much of themselves to help our children and young people be the best they can be in life.”
