Secondary Schools Vegetarian Films Competition

MEDIA RELEASE

Secondary Schools Vegetarian Films Competition

For Immediate Release

Tuesday 22nd October

Secondary school pupils will have the opportunity to explore vegetarian and vegan themes in a new school video competition planned for 2014, and have the chance to win over five thousand dollars’ worth of prizes.

The New Zealand Vegetarian Society today launched its secondary schools video competition, and organiser Julia Clements believes that it will be an excellent chance for teenagers to explore the huge beneficial impact that following a vegetarian or vegan diet can have on one’s own health and the health of the planet, and of course on the well-being of farmed animals and ocean life.

There are 12 categories from which to choose a topic, and these come under a range of headings, from Animal Advocacy to Vegetarian/Vegan Living, through to Protecting the Environment, and Improved Nutrition and Health.
“There is such a lot of scope for telling a great story or getting a powerful message across, so we are excited about the competition,” says Ms Clements.

The competition has been announced now to allow interested teachers time to build it into their curriculum.
“So many vegetarian issues are of major importance to the future health of Earth and its inhabitants and are also relevant to a lot of curriculum topics,” Ms Clements said, “so we want to ensure that as many college pupils as possible get a chance to let their creative side soar whilst learning about the benefits of vegetarianism along the way”.

Winners will be announced on World Vegetarian Day 2014. The school with the overall winning entry will receive a substantial prize, details of which will be announced prior to competition commencement.
