Student sings his way to success

A Whanganui UCOL Certificate in Contemporary Music student has received $1000 and a trophy for sensational singing skills.

Daniel Harding, a Whanganui local, was named second overall in the World Karaoke Championships New Zealand semi-finals in Petone on Saturday.

Whanganui UCOL Contemporary Music Lecturer Elizabeth deVegt says Daniel loves his singing. “We are really proud of Daniel for doing so well in this competition. These are the sorts of activities that enhance student potential. Daniel is a neat student to have around, really creative and passionate.”

Daniel is a member of two Whanganui-based bands, and has performed alongside many well-known New Zealand artists including Jordan Luck, Jackie Clarke, Ben Lummis, and bands The Black Seeds and House of Shem. He has also performed at the International Sevens, and opened for Ardijah in Whanganui in 2010.

He says over the last year he has been brushing up on his music theory knowledge.

"During my study at UCOL I have gained advanced knowledge in song writing which has enabled me to now not only write my own material but write material for others as well.”

Daniel’s study at UCOL will conclude in November this year.

“My next steps after graduating will be to move to Auckland to pursue music and then travel the world,” he says.

UCOL’s Certificate in Contemporary Music L4 is a full-time, one year programme. It provides students with skills in live sound and recording, theory, song writing / composition and music management. For more info please visit www.ucol.ac.nz
