Otago Polytechnic Design students prepare to ‘DEBRIEF’

Otago Polytechnic Design students prepare to ‘DEBRIEF’

Pop-up cinemas, projection displays and Shanghai-inspired fashion designs are just some of the exciting pieces on display, as third-year Otago Polytechnic Design students prepare for DEBRIEF; their end of year exhibition kicking off on Wednesday, November 20.

Spanning four design disciplines, DEBRIEF is an opportunity for Communication, Fashion, Interiors and Product students to make their debuts as designers. It is an exhibition of creativity and flair: a visual reference to the next chapter in life, turning over a new leaf and bookmarking important moments over three years of design degree study.

“The School of Design is seeing one of its largest graduating classes this year, with 75 degree students, so you can expect to see an eclectic display of innovation, creativity and energy,” says Lena Plaksina, a third-year Design (Communication) student.

“Our exhibition is engineered by the graduating class. We create everything from the marketing campaign and branding, to the spatial design and physical construction of the exhibition displays.”

Head of Design and Hospitality, Caroline Terpstra, says the final year exhibition teaches students to become savvy in self-promotion. “Our students have reached a stage where they have confidence as designers, and this event helps them market themselves; a skillset necessary in the design industry.”

In addition to the DEBRIEF exhibition, third year Design (Fashion) students will host an end of year fashion show ‘Collections 13’, showcasing their latest creative collections.

“The creativity and diversity shown in the graduate collections highlights our designers' individual talents and directions, and points to exciting careers ahead,” says Margo Barton, Academic Leader (Fashion).

“We are also very proud to be showcasing collections from our guest students from IFA Paris - Shanghai University of Engineering Science, who are participating in the Dunedin Shanghai Sister City project.”
