MIT Creative Arts Open day highlights students’ inspired work

The Manukau Institute of Technology’s Faculty of Creative Arts is hosting its annual open day this Saturday where graduating students across the three schools of the faculty will be given the opportunity to exhibit their work in a public forum.

Open Sesame is the title of this year’s family friendly event and will be open to the public from 10am to 4pm.

Students from the Certificate in Foundation Studies in Visual Arts Level 3, Foundation Education Programme Creative Arts Level 4, Certificate in Photography Level 4, Certificate in Jewellery Techniques Level 4, Diploma in Jewellery Manufacture and Design Level 5, Diploma in Advanced Jewellery Practice Level 6 and the Bachelor of Creative Arts will have their work showcased on the day, highlighting their hard work and dedication throughout the year.

The event will house a craft market that gives students and the local community the chance to sell arts and crafts to the public.

Not only will the day prove to be a fun outing for the whole family, Open Sesame will provide an opportune time to meet staff and students and explore the possibility of studying one of the MIT Faculty of Creative Arts programmes on offer.

As well as having the chance to view student work, the open day will play host to a string of performances by students, including an adaption of Witi Ihimaera’s short story, “My First Ball”, presented by year two Performing Arts students.

Faculty of Creative Arts Dean, Grant Thompson, says “Open Days are a great opportunity for us to show off the work of our students to the public. There is a good range of presentations this year and students will be around to talk about their work.

“Visitors could also call into Fresh Gallery, Otara for a big day of art in the south,” he says.

The café will be open during the day, offering a range of fresh food and refreshments to the public as they browse the inspired work on display.
