CPIT Metronews snaps up Seven Sharp news desk

CPIT Metronews snaps up Seven Sharp news desk

CPIT New Zealand Broadcasting School students will get an even more authentic feel for industry conditions when they sit down behind the Seven Sharp programme’s news desk to film Metronews this week.

Around 60 students are involved in the production of Metronews, a daily news programme which will be broadcast on Canterbury Television (CTV) weeknights at 7pm from Monday 19 May.

The students work with industry standard filming and production equipment to create the news programme. When second year NZBS student Chris Howe saw the Seven Sharp desk for sale on Trade Me for $1 reserve, he knew it would be make the perfect centrepiece for the Metronews set.

Seven Sharp had purchased a new desk to go with its new presenter line up and the old one was no longer needed. Chris Howe had the job of designing the set for Metronews and couldn’t believe his luck when he spotted the old desk on Trade Me.

“As soon as I saw it I set myself the challenge of securing the desk. I contacted the seller and TVNZ, everyone seemed quite keen to help me out. It was a thrilling chase via emails and phone calls, but once the email arrived saying it was ours, there was a lot of excitement around the school; but this now meant I had another challenge of designing and building a set to compliment the new and very vital focal point,” said Chris.

TVNZ’s Senior Studio manager Norman Sievewright is pleased the desk is going to a new home. “We are big supporters of the NZBS. It is a very deserving recipient of this high quality piece of furniture, which served our team well in the first year of Seven Sharp. The news team is pleased to see it put to good use.”

But Chris still had to get the desk to Christchurch. After contacting a number of freight companies, he negotiated a deal with Mainfreight, who brought it down free of charge.

NZBS tutor Richard Hansen says each year the students create a new set which they usually design and build themselves. Getting a desk like this is a real coup. Chris has designed a new look for Metronews with the front of the desk and a backdrop to compliment the timber top.
