CT scanning technology has been put to novel use at the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Engineering in research aimed at improving the state of the nation’s roads.

Dr Sachi Kodippily of the Faculty’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has been awarded a Rutherford Foundation New Zealand Postdoctoral Fellowship to look at the effects of water on chip seal. Chip seal is the most common surface used on New Zealand’s roads.

The research will be the first of its kind in the world.

“I’m delighted that the Fellowship means I can continue my work in this area,” Dr Kodippily says. “The research has the potential to provide significant efficiency gains by producing best practice guidelines for the roading industry.”

Dr Kodippily completed her PhD at the Faculty’s Transport Research Centre. Centre director and senior lecturer in Civil and Environment Engineering, Dr Theuns Henning, says the Fellowship is recognition of Dr Kodippily’s hard work and dedication.

“I congratulate her on a significant achievement. This research is leading the field in this country in terms of our understanding of road surfaces and how we can potentially save on road maintenance costs in the future.”

Dr Kodippily will take up her Fellowship at the University of Auckland and the research will be conducted in collaboration with New Zealand Transport Agency and the University of Canterbury.
