Registrations open for Kaharoa trolley derby

Registrations open for Kaharoa trolley derby
For immediate release: DRAFT 14 January 2014

Registrations are open for the Kaharoa School Trolley Derby, to be held on Kaharoa Road on Sunday 22 March.

Organised by the Kaharoa School PTA, the trolley derby is set to be a fun-filled family event for the young and old. Racing categories include Dragsters (5-10 year olds), Speedsters (11-17 year olds) and Racers (18 years and over).

Kaharoa School Principal Warwick Moyle said the inaugural event held in 2013 was fantastic.

“I was really taken by the positivity of the last event. Everyone was having fun and smiling regardless of whether they were competing or watching.”

“What’s really exciting is this year’s event is shaping up to be even better.”

“We know many families are starting to plan their carts. We can only take 50 racers so we urge people to register now to secure their spot in the racing,” he said.

“Now is the perfect time to build the cart. With several weeks still to go in the school holidays, designing and building a cart would be a great project for kids.”

“Safety is important and all karts must meet the design rules and specifications on the website. Each kart will be checked on the day before they are allowed to race,” Mr Moyle said.

“And if you don’t want to race, still put this event in your diary. The Trolley Derby is a fantastic community event that has something for everyone. We have the racing, the kid’s entertainment area and gourmet food,” he said.

The races will occur on Kaharoa Road, which will be closed for the event from 8.30am to 3pm. Racing starts at 9am.

Each kart will have three heats. The three fastest times in each category will go through to the final.

The inaugural event was held in 2013 to raise funds for Kaharoa School and in remembrance of a much-loved father from the community, Mike Donnelly. The event was so successful that it will be held every second year for the Kaharoa School PTA.

Entry cost is $15 per trolley and registrations close Friday 6 March 2015.
