STEAM ahead - crowdfunded career event for school girls

SUPERHEROES STEAM AHEAD A FREE EVENT FOR SCHOOL GIRLS & MUMS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (FEBRUARY 9, 2015)

Attention! Introducing a very special event that uses the power of Superheroes to promote careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM).

Superheroes STEAM ahead is a career event for girls and their mums, held in the heart of Auckland at the University of Auckland, School of Engineering, Neon Foyer on 27 February 2015 from 6pm 8pm.

School girls and mums receive advice and guidance from superheroes (technology thought leaders) from around New Zealand and Australia. They will collaborate on exploring new career opportunities and building strong connections in a welcoming networking environment of females.

The event will feature two inspirational talks from very special female superheroes: the Nanogirl aka Dr. Michelle Dickinson and Jewella aka Dr. Jenine Beekhuyzen, founder of TechGirlsMovement. They will give girls practical advice on how to get ahead in their lives and discuss how females can continue innovating and advancing in the workplace.

This event is free for school girls (recommended age is 13 to 18 years old). Each girl is encouraged to bring their mum, or the closest to a mum to this event. There is also going to be a small career fair. At the end of the event, each girl will be given a free book to take home entitled “Tech Girls and Superheros”.

"I feel deeply passionate about my work in the technology industry and would love to see more women working in this field. I was shocked to find out that two of the the top five most popular career choices among New Zealand's school girls are a hairdresser and an air hostess. This event's goal is to educate girls, and their parents, about opportunities in STEAM that they may not be aware about, and help them choose both interesting and futureproof careers.”, states Alyona Medelyan, creator of STEAM ahead and Founder and CEO of Entopix.
