The University of Auckland’s Faculty of Engineering will host one of the world’s leading experts on issues associated with the development and potential deployment of military robots at a public seminar this week.

Ronald Arkin, Regents’ Professor and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States, will speak on the role of lethal autonomous robotic systems and warfare and associated legal, ethical, operational and technical issues.

At an address at the United Nations last year, Professor Arkin discussed how autonomous military robotic systems are capable of reducing civilian casualties and property damage in comparison with human soldiers. However the advent of new technology that could allow intelligent robots to engage in military combat means any decision on their deployment has to be made cautiously and judiciously.

“Professor Arkin is a leading authority on one of the most important issues humankind faces, with robots being increasingly used in military operations,” says Dr Mohan Sridharan from the University of Auckland’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering which co-hosts this lecture for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Society on Social Implications of Technology along with the Robotics and Automation Society.

This public seminar is open to the media and public.

Venue: Room 260-040C
Location: Owen G Glenn Building, 12 Grafton Rd
