Media Design School Ranked 4th Best VFX/Animation School

Media Design School Ranked 4th Best VFX/Animation School Globally

Media Design School has been ranked the fourth best school in the world to study VFX/Animation and Game Art at for 2015 by the Autodesk Sponsored CG Student Awards, with Media Design School students taking out two of the three internships in the Oceania Bootcamp Placement award category.

The CG Student Awards received 1,000 submissions of portfolios from students and recent graduates who had studied at 216 international schools and training facilities.

Each school was awarded points based on data collected from the performance of submissions from students in four of the main Award categories: Student of the Year - VFX/Animation, Student of the Year - Next-Gen Gaming, Film of the Year, and Game of the Year. The CG Student Awards then ranked the quality of the submissions and used this score to determine the Top 20 schools globally.

Media Design School was given a total of 226 points; an equal score to that of the third place ranked tertiary provider on the list.

Of the seven Media Design School Bachelor of Art and Design students who made the top 12 finalist shortlist for the 2015 CG Student Awards Oceania Bootcamp, two students, Rafael Gonzalez Quinones and James Hall, were awarded internships as part of the VFX/Animation Bootcamp.

In addition to the individual successes of Media Design School's students, two of the short films produced by Media Design School’s Bachelor of Art and Design third year students, Over the Moon and Impasse (by student group Front Row Mafia), were both awarded Highly Commended awards in the CG Student Awards Film of the Year category.

The third year Bachelor of Creative Technologies (Game Art) and Bachelor of Software Engineering (Game Programming) production team Heavy Snowfall's game, Dungeon Town, was also awarded a Highly Commended award in the Game of the Year category.

When announcing the awards lists, CG Student Co-Founder Alwyn Hunt individually recognised the success of Media Design School and its students.

“A real highlight for us is seeing the Media Design School, New Zealand, make such a dramatic jump up the ladder from previous years. It's the first time we have actually seen a school from the Oceania region claim a spot in the list,” said Hunt.

Chief Executive Officer of Media Design School, Darryn Melrose, is delighted by the results achieved by Media Design School's students.

"To be recognised by the CG Student Awards as the fourth best provider of education in 3D Animation, Visual Effects, and Games is a reflection of the exceptional calibre of both our faculty and our students," said Melrose.

"It is fantastic to see that Media Design School students from across a range of the school's degrees have been acknowledged for the exceptional work that they produce as part of their studies with Media Design School."

"This result further cements Media Design School's reputation as New Zealand's most awarded tertiary institute for digital and creative technology qualifications and as a school that creates work that is consistently regarded among the very best in the world," concluded Melrose.
