ITC catering for Vocational Pathways in schools

ITC catering for Vocational Pathways in schools

The International Travel College of New Zealand (ITC) is catering for Vocational Pathways in secondary schools with its suite of interactive short courses.

Vocational Pathways, part of the Youth Guarantee Initiative, were put in place to help students tailor their NCEA Level 2 subject choices to real world career options.

“Thanks to Vocational Pathways, students now have a clear understanding of how their studies will shape their future career,” says ITC Account Manager Ceri Jenkins.

To receive a Vocational Pathways Award, students must pass 60 Level 2 Credits from their recommended pathway(s) and 20 of these credits must be from sector-related standards.

This is where ITC can help. ITC provides several sector-related standards to secondary school students. These courses focus on topics such as aviation, employment skills and customer service, and are designed to help prepare students for the tourism industry.

“Students who attend a Level 2 course get so much out of just one one day,” says ITC Short Course Team Leader Melissa Fey.

“They not only gain a lot of information about their chosen subject, but also an awareness of what career options are available to them in the future.”

In addition to providing Vocational Pathways standards, ITC also regularly takes secondary school students on industry site visits as part of a new course called the ‘ITC Intrepid Journey’.

This course is designed to give all students a taste of the tourism industry by taking them out of the classroom and showing them what it’s really like in the workplace. Auckland-based students have the chance to visit sites such as AJ Hackett Bungy and the Maritime Musuem.

“The ITC Intrepid Journey short course is a lifesaver for teachers. It takes the stress out of organising site visits and helps to keep costs to a minimum. We have had great success with this course since launching it in early May,” Mel says.

“We can also tailor this course for areas outside of Auckland if required. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you would like further information.”

The short course team is best contacted via the email schools@itc.co.nz. Alternatively, you can call 0800 868 747 and ask to speak to Ceri, Mel or Ali.
