International Student Numbers Reach All-Time High at WelTec

International student numbers are at an all-time high at the Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec).

Almost 700 students (approximately 460 Equivalent Full-time Students) from countries including China, India, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, the USA and Vietnam are studying with WelTec this year. 450 of the students are attending class at WelTec’s Petone campus, more than 200 are studying at the Hospitality campus at 52 Cuba Street with others studying at WelTec’s Church Street campus. The students are undertaking a range of undergraduate and graduate programmes in the fields of Business, IT, Engineering, Health and Hospitality.

The increase in international students being experienced at WelTec is equivalent to a 35% increase over 2014 and is part of a trend which has seen numbers increase by 150% since 2011. Enquiries from international markets are strong and the numbers of students are forecast to grow with a further intake in November.

“Wellington is a great destination for international students. We have a beautiful and safe city with fantastic services and activities,” says WelTec Chief Executive Chris Gosling.

“International students coming to Wellington to study make a significant positive impact on the economy. They also enrich our city making it more vibrant and giving it a global atmosphere. These students bring many perspectives into the classroom which enhances the learning environment. They also make connections with Kiwi students that can lead to business opportunities later on.

“Each international student studying in New Zealand becomes an ambassador for our country. The relationship with our international student alumni is long lasting and often provides opportunities for future research and development activities and exchanges,” says Chris Gosling.

“WelTec has some great campuses across Wellington including the Hospitality Centre of Excellence in downtown Wellington.

“The brand new Wellington Regional School of Construction in Petone which is 8 minutes from the CBD by train is a fantastic facility. Our School of Engineering has just received a $3M upgrade. Plus we have apartments in upper Willis Street which opened a little over a year ago so we really have the complete package here in Wellington for international students,” says Chris Gosling.
