MEDIA RELEASE NOVEMBER 2015

Get Sun Smart This Summer

This summer, the Cancer Society of New Zealand is giving away a whopping 100,000 x 50gm tubes of its top quality SPF50+ sunscreen to early childhood centres, primary and intermediate schools, to help keep Kiwi kids safe from the risks of sun exposure.

A share of this gigantic donation is available to New Zealand schools that are accredited ‘SunSmart Schools’, or are working towards accreditation. Schools show they are SunSmart by making sure shade is available for kids playing outside, having a policy that kids wear hats, having sunscreen available, and being committed to educating the school community about the risks of UV radiation and the importance of skin protection.

Cancer Society Sunscreen is formulated to an extremely high standard, and tested for SPF, broad-spectrum protection and water resistance – so these schools will know they’re receiving a top quality product to protect kids with.

Fiona Mawley, Manager at Daffodil Enterprises Ltd* says they hope this huge sunscreen donation will help to educate kids about the importance of good sun protection and provide an incentive for schools to become SunSmart.

“Skin cancer is alarmingly common and yet it is largely preventable. Both New Zealand and Australia have the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. We are hoping that by offering free sunscreen to schools, we can encourage them to place a strong focus on educating kids about sun protection – reducing sun exposure, wearing protective clothing and of course, using sunscreen,” says Mawley.

“It’s so important to us that kids know how to protect themselves, and by doing so, help reduce the incidence of this awful disease. We’d like all parents, grandparents, principals, teachers and students to encourage their school to become SunSmart!”

A portion of funds raised from every Cancer Society Sunscreen sold is donated back to the Cancer Society of New Zealand to help fund health promotion activities like the SunSmart school programme, and support those suffering from cancer. Cancer Society Sunscreen has raised more than $1.5 million for the charity in the last three years!
