Unitec celebrates double success at Asian film festival
Unitec’s Department of Performing and Screen Arts in Auckland was the big winner at the Asia Micro Film Festival held in China this month. Unitec’s 2014 grad film Mine was jointly awarded Best International Short Film with four other films, including Wong Cha Cha, which was written and directed by the school’s head of department, Alex Lee. Lee is also a film producer and current chair of Film Auckland.
Wong Cha Cha is about a displaced elderly Singaporean migrant who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a young European woman through their mutual love for Latin dance. Mine was written by Emilia Robinson, directed by Paloma Schneideman, and crewed by Unitec students as part of their graduation work. The film tells the story of a young mother who must come to terms with the consequences of a difficult decision.
The Asia Micro Film Festival 2015 was held in the Yunnan District, and organised by the City of Lincang, China Central TV (the national state broadcaster) and National TV Artistes Association of China (national TV organisation), 5 films were jointly awarded Best International Short Film.
Schneideman says making Mine was a "real celebration of collaboration", a sentiment shared by Lee, who said the film’s continued success on the national and international film festival circuit was shared by the entire cast and crew as well as the teaching team at Unitec.
