Otago Polytechnic’s golden anniversary year of celebrations begins tomorrow with the opening of The Hub and Mason Centre

Otago Polytechnic’s first major commemorative event celebrating fifty years of delivering hands-on, career-focused education in Dunedin takes place tomorrow with the official opening of The Hub and Mason Centre.

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull and Labour MP David Clark will be attending, as well as a founding member of the 1966 Otago Polytechnic council, 101 year old Dawn Ibbotson, who has been invited to cut the anniversary cake. Otago Polytechnic’s first Deputy Principal Ted Aitcheson, who was Principal from 1974 to 1985, will also be there.

The Hub will be formally opened by distinguished alumnus Nigel Bamford, co-founder and Chief Executive of Dunedin based gas-fire manufacturing company Escea.

Short biography of Dawn Ibbotson, founding Otago Polytechnic council member:

Dawn Ibbotson CBE graduated from the University of Otago in 1936 with a Bachelor of Home Science. She was the first woman member of the Council of the Dunedin College of Education, was a member of the 1966 Otago Polytechnic Council, a life member of the National Council of Women, a national life member of the Board of Management, a co-convener for Amnesty International, National President of the Home Science Alumnae, deputy chair of Knox College, member of the Consumer Price Index Revision Advisory Committee, and involved in many community, church and educational groups.
