Māori and Pasifika Adult Educators Gather at Wharewaka o Pōneke for Annual Hui Fono
Over a hundred and forty Māori and Pasifika adult educators will gather at Te Wharewaka o Pōneke February 24-26 for the annual Hui Fono which offers professional development and networking opportunities for Māori and Pasifika working in the Adult and Community Education (ACE) Sector.
Now in its ninth year, the Hui Fono is a well established gathering of Māori and Pasifika ACE practitioners attracting a dynamic range of speakers, innovators and entertainers.
The theme for Hui Fono 2016 is Hohe – Foe - Fohe – ‘Oe – Voce - Journeys of the Past, Present and Future. It explores the notion of ‘paddling’ as a unifying action requiring purpose, fervour and unity. Māori and Pasifika attending the Hui Fono will be challenged to reflect on and carry forward the confidence, innovation and leadership shown by their ancestors as they navigated the great oceans of Te Moana –nui-a-kiwa (the Pacific).
Speakers at the Hui Fono include youth and justice advocate Tamm Kingi-Falakoa and broadcaster and musician Kihi Ririnui. The workshop programme will explore democracy education, how to engage Māori and Pasifika in literacy and numeracy, a Samoan teaching framework, community law education and Pacific history. A highlight of the workshop programme will be the practical waka experience on the Wellington Harbour.
There are a large number of Māori and Pasifika led ACE programmes offered in a variety of settings throughout Aotearoa. They include schools, specialist non-government organizations such as Literacy Aotearoa, English Language Partners, Rural Education Activities Programmes, polytechnics, continuing education departments of universities and private training establishments.
