First Open Source Scholarship recipients announced

10 February 2016

Catalyst is delighted to announce the first two recipients of the Catalyst Open Source Scholarship. Recipients Liam Sharpe and Aleisha Amohia will receive $2000 towards study costs each year for the next three years, while they complete their Bachelor of Science degrees. Both are majoring in computer science.

Mr Sharpe says he is “really excited” about the scholarship and the prospect of a job at Catalyst once he is finished studying.

“A scholarship to cover each year of my course is great and takes a bit of the pressure off for the future fees,” says Ms Amohia.

“This is our investment in the next generation of talented open source developers. We want to encourage them to excel in their chosen careers. As a company, it's important we give back by supporting the professionals of the future, and this scholarship helps us do that” says Don Christie, Catalyst Director.

Mr Sharpe and Ms Amohia are also working part-time at Catalyst while they complete their studies, at WelTec and Victoria University of Wellington respectively.

“It's important we give students real opportunities to put what they're learning into practice. Aleisha and Liam are incredibly talented and they're helping us as much as we're helping them,” says Mr Christie.

Catalyst will offer the Open Source Scholarship to two more recipients each year, with preference given to those who have previously taken part in the Open Source Academy (www.catalyst.net.nz/academy). Applications are invited from students who intend to study computer science or related subjects.
