Polytechnic staff and students to learn basic sign language

Otago Polytechnic has partnered with Deaf Aotearoa to teach students and staff some basic sign language, in recognition of Sign Language Week.

It’s also the 10th anniversary of sign language becoming New Zealand’s third official language.

Otago Polytechnic’s deaf students, disability support students and staff from Deaf Aotearoa will be at the institute’s popular Eden Café on Thursday 12 Maybetween 11am and 1pm. They’ll teach staff and students signs for coffee, tea, milk and sugar, for example.

Eden Café manager, Tim McRobbie, is looking forward to the experience.

“It’s going to be a fun way to support and raise awareness of our third official language,” he says.

Polytechnic staff and students are also invited to attend two sign language workshops being held on campus on the 24 and 31 May.
