Double festival success for Unitec film graduate

Wait, a short film written and directed by 2011 Unitec Performing and Screen Arts graduate Yamin Tun, has been selected for New Zealand’s Best Short Film competition at this year’s New Zealand International Film Festival in July. The news comes hot on the heels of her film being selected for the Sydney Film Festival this month.

"Wait is a script I wrote whilst at Unitec and developed further the following year. I am so grateful for the learning at Unitec that enabled us to make this film," Yamin says. Several of Yamin’s Unitec classmates who have also since graduated worked as crew on the film; Ricky Li (Additional Editor), Brian Maru (Art Assistant), Tashi Hope (Camera Assistant) and Slade Young (Extra).

It is not the first time one of Yamin’s films has featured on the film festival circuit. Since graduating from Unitec with a Graduate Diploma in Creative Practice, majoring in directing, her short film Two Princes was selected to screen at the New Zealand International Film Festival in 2012. Two Princes and another of her short films, Joy were selected by the Auckland Arts Festival to screen in Aotea Square in 2015.

Yamin is currently employed by Creative New Zealand as Project Manager for the Auckland Diversity Project, a new initiative which supports projects that increase arts attendance and participation by Māori, Pacific and Asian communities in the Auckland Region. Burmese-born, Hong Kong-raised, and British-educated, she is a graduate of Oxford University and Unitec. The Westmere resident now calls New Zealand home after moving here in 2007.
