Hoop dreams made reality

31 August 2016

Basketball has become very popular in Pukekohe, with the recent success of the Breakers and the phenomenal efforts of Steven Adams in the Oklahoma City Thunder.

At Valley School it is no different, with eight mixed Year Five and Six teams regularly playing together.

And thanks to a $5,404 donation from the Harcourts Pukekohe, through the Harcourts Foundation, the school now has two permanent basketball hoops in their hall.

Sports coordinator Leanne Dodd says the old temporary hoops they had were battered and not at the correction height.

“This means so much to the kids. We’ve been looking to buy permanent hoops for a couple of years. We’ve fundraised, held a fun run and it still wasn’t enough. This grant means we can go out and buy them tomorrow.”

Harcourts Pukekohe sales consultant Donna Boden, whose two sons attend the school, says she was pleased to be able to help the school which has been so good to her boys.

This year Valley School, with a total student population of around 500, will take a boys and girls team to the wider Franklin schools basketball competition.

This is Zettie’s tale from her birth date in 1965 through to her ‘passing’ at the age of 105.
