On World Water Day, pre-school kids learn to save 20

As Aucklanders continue to come together to reduce their water use and ‘save 20’ everyday, one daycare in Central Auckland is getting on the bandwagon by teaching water conservation to its youngest kids.

Lollipops Educare in St Lukes celebrated World Water Day by practising water conservation and promoting waterwise tips at the centre. Children enjoyed water-free activities such as colouring with pens instead of watercolours and learnt the importance of water and its uses through song and dance. They were also encouraged to pour leftover water from their glasses into a jug that would be used to water the plants in their outdoor area.

Teacher and team leader for the infants room Sneh Bharat says the idea was topical given Watercare’s ‘Save 20’ water conservation campaign. “We’ve been teaching our children the role water plays in our lives through various learning activities. With the recent storms and the need to save water, we thought World Water Day offered the perfect opportunity to celebrate the importance of water and highlight why we need to conserve it.”

Aucklanders are being urged to reduce their water use by 20 litres a day, which is two buckets of water. Auckland recently experienced “off the charts” rainfall, which caused significant slips and erosion in the Hunua Ranges, where our largest water storage dams are located. The Ardmore  Water Treatment Plant, which supplies up to two thirds of the region’s water, is operating at reduced capacity to cope with the increase in silt.

Five easy ways to reduce your water use

1. Cut your shower time by two minutes: Approximate saving = 16 litres
2. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. Approximate saving = 4 litres
3. Only run your dishwasher when it’s full.
4. Only run your washing machine when it’s full.
5. Use the half-flush on your toilet.

Ends.
