Lucky guess wins rugby balls for local schools

For St Paul’s Collegiate School student Joe Gray this was not your typical ‘guess the number of lollies in the jar’ competition, instead Joe had to guess how many rugby balls filled a land rover – and he guessed correctly, winning 200 rugby balls for his school.

The Year 9 student was the winner of the Land Rover New Zealand rugby ball competition that ran during Fieldays, correctly guessing that the Land Rover Discovery Sport located at their Fieldays site was filled with 200 balls. Mica Dawson and Jade Cleary from Hamilton’s Duncan & Ebbett (Land Rover NZ’s local retailer), gifted the balls to Joe during his Physical Education class at St Paul’s today.

But seeing as 200 balls is quite a lot, Joe has decided to donate some of the balls to other local schools. “I could have put them on Trademe and sold them off, however I wanted to gift them not only to my school, but other schools in the community,” says Joe.

50 balls will go to each of St Paul’s ‘Over the Fence’ schools – Bankwood and Fairfield Primary – the schools St Paul’s students’ visit to provide service and support as part of their ‘Over the Fence Ministry’ programme. 25 balls will go to each of Joe’s own primary schools – Tirau and Matamata. 50 balls will remain with St Paul’s.

The competition was inspired by Land Rover New Zealand’s sponsorship of the 2017 British and Irish Lions tour. It was open to anyone who attended the Fieldays and around a thousand entries were received. As part of the prize, Joe had also received tickets to the Lions vs. Chiefs match that took place in Hamilton last month.
