Manurewa High School Joins #myidentity Campaign

Today, Manurewa High School announced that it will be first school joining the Superdiversity Centre for Law, Policy and Business’ campaign, #myidentity.

Mai Chen, Chair of the Superdiversity Centre, met with students at the school today to celebrate their participation in the #myidentity campaign which captures New Zealanders different stories that reflect multiple identities.

“Manurewa High School is the first school to join the #myidentity campaign. All students have been invited to film short videos of their unique identity as a way to better understand each other including their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and (dis)ability. Telling their stories encourages acceptance that we are all diverse,” said Ms Chen. “It also grows the capability of the students to relate to people who are not like them, or who have a different chosen identity.”

Manurewa High School is the largest multicultural school in New Zealand, with over 2,000 students representing 50 nationalities.

Ms Chen said “It is great to see young people showing leadership in building the social and cultural capability in New Zealand by sharing their #myidentity story. I challenge other schools to do the same, and join the #myidentity campaign.”

The #myidentity campaign will be officially launched on Thursday 1 March 2018 by the Rt Honourable Dame Patsy Reddy, New Zealand’s Governor-General. The Hon Carmel Sepuloni, Minister for Social Development, Disability Issues and Associate Minister for Arts Culture Heritage, and Pacific Peoples, and the Minister for Women, the Hon Julie Anne Genter will also be speaking.
