G.J. Gardner Homes event shows a great career doesn’t always involve University

Hundreds of Auckland high school students are expected to attend a Future Pathways Industry Expo sponsored by G.J. Gardner Homes on Thursday. Held at Massey High school in West Auckland, the expo will see students from 10 local Secondary Schools arrive by bus to take part in one of the three sessions across the day from 9am to 3pm.

Interactive exhibits will be on display from local and national employers, Industry Training Organisations, the Defence Force and Police – including a visit from the police helicopter, police dogs and the Armed Offenders Squad.

Managing Director Grant Porteous says: “We all care deeply about future generations and think it’s vital that today’s students are fully aware of the many interesting and rewarding careers available to them that don’t necessarily require a University education.

“We are a proud Kiwi-owned and operated family business, as are our 29 franchisees around the country. We are New Zealand’s number one home builder and we have plenty of very successful people in our team whose career paths didn’t involve going to University”

This is the first year G.J. Gardner Homes have sponsored the event and their franchisees in West Auckland and Rodney West have worked closely with local schools and exhibitors to ensure students learn about the rewarding career options that don’t require a University education. The level of interest from both schools and exhibitors was much higher than predicted and up to 1200 students are expected to attend tomorrow.

All exhibitors align to one of six vocational pathways including construction and infrastructure, creative industries, primary industries, service industries, social and community services, and manufacturing and technology. These provide a framework for students to show how their learning and achievement is valued in the workplace by aligning learning to the skills needed for industry.
